The south wing of the Mayflower’s Health Center is devoted to residents with some form of dementia or confusion. It is licensed through the Iowa Department of Inspections and Appeals as a special care unit. This wing, known as South Village, has an electromagnetic door lock which prevents residents from wandering away. The public address system has been turned off in this wing and there is only one telephone so the Village has a restful quiet atmosphere one can sense immediately upon entering. The maximum capacity for the wing is only 16 residents, so there is a greater feeling of “family.” The staff have received specialized training to enable them to better meet the unique needs of this segment of the Health Center’s population.
