On August 23rd, Grinnell College student, Carolina Klauck Novaes, shared information about her home country Brazil with The Mayflower Community residents in Beebe Assisted Living and Health Center. The accompanying photos are courtesy of Community Life and Wellness Coordinator, Tracy Woolfolk, who organized the program.
Carolina’s home is Porto Alegre, shown in the map in the southern part of Brazil. Roughly translated it means, “Happy Port.” Growing up, she spent much time with her grandparents in their 1920’s home and store. The store, with its array of antiques, was used often for filming of Brazilian movies.
In Brazil, there is a strong German influence, especially in architecture. With her family being German immigrants, Carolina has chosen to major in German at Grinnell College.
Carolina shared slides of market places, Samba music and dancing, a Brazilian cowboy, weekend barbeques (specializing in skewers), and the lavender growing along the Romantic Route,
One of her slides depicted a special tea that no one drinks alone. Prior to the pandemic, Brazilians shared the drink from a common straw. Now, they have their own cups, but still drink with company.
