During this recent favorable weather, Mayflower residents have been able to enjoy Friday evening’s “Music in the Park,” next door to The Mayflower Community. Coordinated by Mayflower’s Community Life department and assisted by volunteer Carolina Klauk Novaes, the outing was possible for residents from Beebe Assisted Living and the Health Center were able to attend.
Recently, The Mayflower Community Residents in the Health Center and Beebe Assisted Living had fun decorating deserts. Led by Foodservice Supervisor Jacob Staroska, and organized by the Community Life depart., residents worked with hazelnut mousse in a chocolate shell. They decorated with peanuts, maraschino cherries, whip cream, pastry cream, caramel sauce, chocolate sauce and cranberry
Community Life assistant, Cecelia Bagnoli, shared the companionship of her dog with Mayflower Community residents. Guitarist/keyboardist, Ronnie Burgess, lives in Cedar Rapids IA. Ron played both the Beebe Circle and the Health Center Courtyard in The Mayflower Community on Thursday, July 8th. He mixes up things, sometimes playing keyboard and sometimes guitar. His music consists of old standards, country, and some gospel. Ron has been playing music since 1962. Ron’s
Bill Lawyer is an acoustical guitarist from Marshalltown. On Tuesday, July 6th, Bill played outdoors for Mayflower residents in the Beebe Circle and in the Health Center Courtyard. He had played Mayflower previously with a vocal partner, Joan Grufe, who has since retired. Bill describes himself a “finger-style flat-picking guitarist.” Playing since he was 15
A standing committee of Mayflower Community residents organized a multiple-floats entry for Grinnell’s annual 4th of July Parade. The City’s parade began at Davis School on the corner of Hamilton and Broad. It proceeded north on Broad right through the west side of the Mayflower campus and on downtown to the north side of Grinnell.
The special Mayflower beans, descendants from the Mayflower ship beans, which were planted earlier in the Spring, are doing quite well just south of The Mayflower Community’s Watertower Square building. As you can see from these photos, the beans perched prominently in the middle of the Mayflower residents’ garden are beginning to climb their trellises.
Curt Vos, Mayflower Community’s finish carpenter, retired Wednesday, June 30th, marking just short of 35 years of service to The Mayflower Community (Grinnell IA).
