Aubrie Torhorst, a Grinnell College senior art major and co-captain of the College golf team, has conducted several workshops with Mayflower Community Health Center residents. In this volunteer work, the Wisconsin native displayed some of her artwork and directed residents as they did their own drawings.
Last October, Aubrie led a session to produce monsters. Recently, Aubrie guided a project to draw “chimera,” a mixed-media design of Greek mythological characters.
According to the Britannica website, “A chimera is a fire-breathing female monster resembling a lion in the forepart, a goat in the middle, and a dragon behind. The character devastated Caria and Lycia until she was slain by Bellerophon. In art, the chimera is usually represented as a lion with a goat’s head in the middle of its back and with a tail that ends in a snake’s head. The word is now used generally to denote a fantastic idea or figment of the imagination.
In the accompanying photo, Aubrie shares some of her senior show artwork with residents works with Mayflower residents Wilma Graden, Norma Veldboom, Jeanette Tisdale, and Jean Carpenter.
