On February 28th, Ramsey-Weeks realtor, Kevin Kolbe, was the featured speaker for The Mayflower Community (Grinnell IA) weekly “Lyceum” program. Lyceum is Latin referring to an educational setting for discussions and performances. Each week, Mayflower residents coordinate entertainment for residents and their guests. This varies from musical performances, readings, travel videos and slides, informational presentations, and Grinnell High School and Grinnell College play snippets.
Kevin shared the story of his third-leg walk of the Appalachian Trail, running along the Appalachian Mountains in the Eastern U.S., which starts at Springer Mountain, Georgia and ends at Mt. Katahdin, Maine. Kevin has completed three separate walks over the last three summers. This year, his walk took him into mosquito-infested New York and New Jersey on the pedestrian footpath, which was completed in 1930s. Managed by the National Parks Service and other organizations, the 2,180-mile Trail offers primitive support for walkers.
Kevin discussed his provisions and packing, which included a one-man tent and a water filtration device (pictured below). He described the physical and mental toll the walk can inflict on participants, especially if they have not prepared for it. His presentation and question-and-answer session helped attendees understand life on the Appalachian Trail.
