On Monday, July 29th, Anne Sunday, Mayflower Independent Living Activities Coordinator, and Kayley Thompson, UPH-Grinnell Wellness Specialist, will present “Matter of Balance” at the weekly Senior Education Program (SE*ED).
The hospital’s long-standing SE*ED program, offers free health-related and entertainment programs nine months a year open to the public on Monday mornings at 10:00am in the Drake Community Library.
On the 29th, the evidence-based and award-winning falls prevention program, “Matter of Balance,” will be described to the gathering. It is an offering of the Area Agencies on Aging designed to reduce seniors’ fear of falling, thus, allowing more freedom of activity. Sunday and Thompson have been certified as instructors for the eight-week group interventions course that has been offered seven times over the last three years in The Mayflower Community. The presenters will discuss the importance of exercise for balance and will lead attendees through a couple of basic exercises as a sample.
In addition, Sunday and Thompson will present “No Fall-ty Habits,” a tool to evaluate one’s living space to ensure it is as fall-proof as possible.
The next regular Matter of Balance course will be offered in Mayflower’s Montgomery Lounge beginning at the end of September for two hours per session over eight weeks. Participants will enjoy learning practical fall prevention techniques and simple exercises to increase flexibility, strength, and balance.
The course is open to participants from the Grinnell community. The cost is $20, and class size is usually limited to 8-12. Please call Mayflower at 641-236-6151 to register.
