Enjoying one of the last warm days of the season, residents and staff of The Mayflower Community were treated to a cookout and outdoor music on Tuesday, October 13th.
A picnic on the Buckley Courtyard patio featured quarter-pound, all beef hotdogs; ground sirloin hamburgers; and brats accompanied by potato salad, coleslaw, and baked beans with homemade cookies for desert. Besides the attractive meal prepared other than in one’s own home, the 91 residents and staff enjoyed getting out and connecting with folks that we don’t see as often as in the “old days” (pre-pandemic).
Later in the day, members of Grinnell’s renowned Too Many String Band, Sig Barber and Sandy and Betty Moffett, played in the Beebe Circle and then moved to the front of the Health Center. (All three performers are Mayflower residents.) Independent living residents along with Beebe Assisted Living and Health Center residents were able to hear and enjoy. Who in Grinnell doesn’t?!
One of the highlights of the day was welcoming back to work Food Service cook, Pounch (Darrell) Rojohn, after an extended recovery from a health episode.
An independent living resident exuded about the day’s activities, “Today’s events were enjoyable and inspiring in the midst of difficult times. I loved that we could have it outside!” A Health Center resident noted, “The music today was a success!”
In thanking Betty, Sandy, and Sig, Mayflower’s Community Life Director, Leslie Jaworski, said “Thank you so much for sharing your talents with residents and staff at Beebe, the Health Center, and beyond. It was wonderful to see you, hear you, tap our toes, and sing under our masks with you on such a beautiful fall day. Good for the soul, for one and for all.” That is how it is at Mayflower.
