The Mayflower Community (Grinnell IA) is now providing high-definition (HD) cable TV and high-speed Internet service to all 275 residents.
Mediacom Communications Corp. will supply these services under a long-term contract with Mayflower. The cost is included in residents’ monthly fees at a substantial savings from direct services with either of the two vendors currently serving local residents.
This is part of Mayflower’s long-range plan to upgrade connectivity and strength of signal throughout the 35-acre campus to improve communications quality and speed. HD TV will provide improved picture quality for the basic family package of channels. The fast Internet (60/5mbps) will enhance use of video conferencing (such as Zoom), telemedicine, webinars, streaming services, connectivity with family members, and more.
Pictured are Jenny and Luther Erickson in their Pearson building apartment. Luther works on his laptop computer, which he uses to stay in touch via Zoom with numerous friends and colleagues. Prior to the pandemic, he participated in two different weekly coffee groups that now meet on Zoom. Jenny and Luther are enjoying the high-quality HD TV picture for watching some football.
Mayflower is convinced that social connections will become more vital over time, even after the pandemic ends. Expanded online services are planned for Mayflower resident directories, food menus and ordering, communications, emails, calendars, reservations, announcements, and Mayflower Residents Association activities.
In order to implement this change, Mayflower upgraded wiring to the eight campus buildings and all individual homes in those buildings. The wiring to all 48 Harwich Terrace patio homes was already current generation.
Mayflower will now be the first call for assistance when residents have a TV or Internet issue. Mayflower has a direct line to customer service staff.
