48 Mayflower Community residents participated in one of our periodic “Story Circles” presented by the Independent Living Activities department and hosted by resident Harriet Adelberg. On Tuesday evening, October 23rd, residents gathered for Mayflower homemade pizza. Then, the “Jobs I Have Held” stories started flowing. Dorothy Williams told of her rise in the publishing world, using a mixture of secretarial tools and feminine wiles before she could apply her writing and editing skills. Warren Reinecke shared a story of being duped by the boss’ son into competing for a cash gift that belonged to Warren’s best friend. Gene Herman related a summer experience of boxing and shipping second-rate books punctuated by the excitement of a visit by a celebrity photographer, who, as it turned out, was publishing pornography.
There were a number of additional stories. The evening’s highlight was honoring resident intern, Johnny Khuu, on his birthday by collecting goods for the Mid-Iowa Community Action (MICA) food pantry. Mayflower and MICA are sharing Johnny during this one-year internship. Mayflower residents will contrive any excuse for a party!
