On Thursday, January 17th, the monthly themed meal in The Mayflower Community (Grinnell, Iowa) drew 98 diners for Vietnamese food. The event was sponsored by the Mayflower Residents Association Social Committee and hosted by George and JoAnn Britton. Mayflower’s Director of Food Services, Scott Gruhn, worked with Mayflower’s Resident Intern, Johnny Khuu to develop the menu. Johnny’s father is an immigrant from Viet Nam who was sponsored by a California Church. Once settled in the Bay Area, he started his American born family. Johnny has a younger brother.
Johnny researched Vietnamese food options to recommend to Scott and included some preparation videos for use by staff. The menu consisted of Vietnamese pork chops, Hainanese chicken, jasmine white rice, ginger garlic rice, cucumbers, kimchi, and beef pho served following Vietnamese rice paper rolls appetizers. Desert was Vietnamese fruit cocktail.
A fun time was had by all as they filled the Buckley Dining Room and the Buckley Anchor Room.
