The first of four Salsa dancing sessions took place in The Mayflower Community on Tuesday, July 23rd. The last three sessions will be held on successive Tuesday nights from 6:30 to 7:30pm on the Buckley Courtyard Patio. Lessons are led by Silvia Ardila for residents, employees, and members of the public. The cost is $5.00 per session. It is not necessary to attend all lessons.
One of Tuesday night’s participants observed, “It really was fun and was easier than I expected! I am no dancer, but the more we practiced I started to get more into the flow. Salsa is an amazing exercise for the body and for the brain. It illustrated for me everything Steve Langerud [Mayflower Executive Director] has been trying to “preach” about the benefits of exercise, learning new things, and socialization. For me the evening was exhilarating! We enjoyed getting to know the folks from town who came out and hope others will join us next week.”
Salsa is a popular form of social dance originating from Cuban folk dances. Different regions of Latin America and the United States have distinct salsa styles of their own. Attendees are learning “Basico” footwork and partner turns/spins, using today’s popular salsa music! All skill levels are welcome.
Silvia Ardila began salsa dancing in her native Caracas, Venezuela – Upon moving to San Juan, Puerto Rico she joined one of the area’s top Salsa Academies as a trainer. She regularly attends Puerto Rican Salsa festivals and performances, expanding her repertoire of steps and turns.
The class will culminate with a Salsa party on Tuesday, August 20th. The culminating lesson will be held at 5:00pm on the Buckley patio. That will be followed by a special Venezuelan-themed dinner limited to the first 100 Mayflower residents who have reservations.
Please sign up for the lessons in the Mayflower Pearson lobby or by contacting Anne Sunday, Mayflower’s Independent Living Activities Coordinator
