Thursday, April 4th, Grinnell’s famed Shults & Company entertained Mayflower Community residents and guests with a medley of Easter songs. Shults & Co have traditionally performed a big blowout, three-night musical gig in April, every other year. This is the “other year.” So, why did they get together, rehearse, and present a meaningful and strong musical rendition this April…at Mayflower? Well, one of the primary reasons is that they like doing this for Mayflower folks. The turnout of over 100 showed that the feeling is mutual.
Singing in the group alongside organizers, Frank and Sherry Shults, were Gailanne Dill, Debby Pohlson, Keith Briggs, Tim Dill, George Drake, Bill Hammen, and Austin Jones. Lowell and Kathy Vanderploeg and Mary Fopma performed on drums and keyboards. Bill Hammen played guitar for a couple of pieces.
Since 1995, coupled with Grinnell Rotarians, Shults & Co singers and musicians have raised almost $100,000 for worthy Grinnell causes during their bi-annual April shows. Groups helped by these efforts include UPH-Grinnell Hospital, the Grinnell Senior Center, middle and high school music departments, the Grinnell Recreation Department, The Grinnell Area Arts Council, the Drake Community Library, and Grinnell Production. And, oh yes, Shults & Co raised the Easter spirits at The Mayflower Community!
