A Mayflower residents’ activity designed to help deal with winter isolation will be offered, starting in January. Led by Mayflower resident, Grinnell College Writing Lab professor, and writer, Betty Moffett (Yes, of “Too Many String Band” fame!), the six-week course will run from January 7th through February 11th on Monday nights from 7:00 to 8:15pm.
Entitled, “Wine and Writing,” the course is intended to assist participants write a series of vignettes that would be interesting for their families to read and treasure. It is not intended to make anyone a professional short story writer but, rather, to provide an opportunity to relax, have fun, and learn about others.
The initial meeting will be in the Buckley Dining Room on January 7th. Betty will provide an introduction and some general short-story writing guidelines. A variety of beverages will be available each week.
Fledgling writers will commit to small groups of four to six people who will meet in the five follow-on sessions in Mayflower space—Game Room, J&B Bistro, Anchor Room, or Buckley Bistro. The small group will offer cooperative and supportive listening to the stories written at home by group members. The subject could be fiction or memories of one’s past.
Weekly, two members of the group will bring stories with copies for the other members. If the writer agrees to do a 15 to 20-minute reading, the group members will offer reactions and thoughts. Then, the writer can revise the story at home for her/his own collection.
