John and Pasha Buck have lived in The Mayflower Community since July of 2018. Pasha is currently serving as Mayflower’s interim chaplain, a challenge in these times of social distancing.
Both John and Pasha have rich instrumental music backgrounds. John played trumpet and baritone in junior high and high school. In the 1950’s, he played stand-up bass viola for the Marshalltown area Lucky Seven Dance Band. Since then, he has played tuba and guitar.
Pasha grew up playing piano and learned organ in college. She has had a number of stints as organist for Nebraska and Kansas churches. After they married, the Lucky Seven band would come to their farmhouse to jam in the living room. Not to be left out, Pasha learned to play tenor sax by ear and joined them.
They are still jamming. In a Saturday (June 13th) “pop-up” performance, John and Pasha played in the Watertower Square Jewel Courtyard for an appreciative, socially-distanced audience of about 20 Mayflower residents. In addition, they have “blown” on a number of occasions in the Buckley Courtyard.
Ever since the COVID-19 death toll hit 100,000 Americans, John has kicked off their duets with the playing of taps at 3:00pm.
