The Mayflower Community Continues to Learn about Dementia

A leadership team from The Mayflower Community (Grinnell IA) is attending the LeadingAge Iowa Spring Conference on Wednesday and Thursday, May 1st and 2nd at the Prairie Meadows Conference Center in Altoona, Iowa. LeadingAge Iowa is a professional association of Iowa not-for-profit senior living and nursing care providers.

Even though in 1993 Mayflower established the first dementia care facility in the Grinnell area, Mayflower professionals continue to learn about dementia care breakthroughs to provide support for residents and their families. Affecting over half of all adults over age 65, dementia significantly alters lives and relationships. Mayflower’s goal is to provide “memory support” to enhance the quality of life.

At Wednesday’s session, “Behavioral and Psychological Symptoms of Dementia—Detection and Management,” Dr. Yogesh Shah, Broadlawns Medical Center, Des Moines presented the latest findings and support techniques. Dr. Shah is a Family Medicine Specialist with 38 years of experience who served his residency at Mercy/Mayo in Des Moines and his fellowship in geriatric medicine at the Mayo Clinic, Rochester, Minnesota.

The photos above show the agenda and the session led by Dr. Shah. Attending were Mayflower’s Steve Langerud, Executive Director, and Kellie McGriff, Associate Director/Administrator. Other Mayflower staff attending the conference are Pam Vosburg, Chief Financial Officer; Jacki Hicklin, Director of Nursing; and Kristin Davidson, Staff Accountant and Accounts Payable Manager.
