The weather outside was frightful (rainy, cold, windy). That didn’t stop residents, staff, and family members of The Mayflower Community from conducting a venture to celebrate the Healthiest State Walk on October 2nd. As usual, when the weather is inclement, Mayflower folks move about the eight-building campus indoors. We used the skywalk, tunnels, hallways, and elevators to travel from the Health Center at 600 Park Street to the Watertower Square atrium, 625 Broad Street, and back again…a trip of almost a mile.
The caravan of residents walked and rolled from the Health Center lobby, over the skywalk (where we stopped to enjoy the rain), to Beebe Assisted Living, to the Buckley Dining Room, through the Kiesel Theatre tunnel, via the Caulkins Crossing, under Broad Street, across the Watertower Square parking garage, and up to the atrium to view the Jewel Gardens to the west and the beautiful décor of the Watertower Square.
Then, it was back home. Whew!
The Mayflower Community celebrated the 9th annual Healthiest State Walk as decreed by Iowa Governor Kim Reynolds. Recommended to be at least 30 minutes in duration, the Mayflower folks walked for almost an hour. The purpose of the walk is to encourage citizens and organizations to commit to healthy endeavors. Mayflower conducts regular health seminars, the most recent being three sessions about how to live with Parkinson’s disease. In addition to educational programs, support groups; counseling services; and regular yoga, Theraband, and exercise activities are offered along with the 24/7 availability of the Obermiller Wellness Center. No matter what the weather!
