On Sunday, March 17th, members of the Deep River American Legion Post 296 presented Mayflower Health Center resident, Timer (Norman) McCombs, with a Quilt of Valor. A large number of family members and many of his Health Center friends were able to be present. The quilt commemorates Timer’s service in the U.S. Army during World War II.
Timer was inducted into service in September 1946 and was stationed in Japan from 1946 until 1948. Serving as a Private 1st Class, he was a prison guard and an M-1 “Sharp Shooter.” He was awarded the Victory Medal and the Army Occupation Medal.
The mission of the national Quilts of Valor Foundation is “to cover service members and veterans touched by war with comforting and healing Quilts of Valor.” Iowa has an active chapter of Quilts of Valor. In 2018, more than 4,100 people in the United States volunteered to sew, quilt, cut, and press. 1,000 were first-time volunteers. They produced 276 quilts from 8,032 patriotic blocks.
Timer’s quilt, sewn and quilted by Patricia Ann Hefel of Sherrill, Iowa, is 61½” x 72½” and has stars in all four corners.
