Mayflower’s Scott Gruhn (rhymes with “swoon,” like people do with his food!) is the architect of Open Dining for residents in independent living and nursing care. In Grinnell, Scott’s name is synonymous with great food, quality presentation, and cordial catering.
Scott has held the position of Food Service Director at The Mayflower Community (Grinnell IA) since 1989. The Housekeeping and Laundry directorship was added in 2008. In 1996, Scott took a four-year hiatus during which he owned and operated a restaurant and worked in the entertainment industry before returning in 2000.
He oversees a staff of 35 full and part-time staff who provide meals and snacks in four campus dining rooms, linen and personal laundry service for about 100 healthcare and independent living residents, and care and cleaning for the entire campus of six apartment buildings, one assisted living facility, and one nursing building. In addition to daily operations, he and his staff provide catering services for Mayflower residents and community events.
Scott has a Culinary Arts AAS (associate’s in applied science) degree from Kirkwood Community College, which included an internship at the Barn Restaurant in the Amana Colonies where he also worked full-time following graduation. Married with two sons and a daughter-in-law, Scott is a Grinnell native. In his free time, he enjoys….cooking! In addition, he finds time to pursue his interest in preserving artifacts and dining collectables, serving on the Board of the Grinnell Historical Museum.
